Trains to the PACA region

SNCF (Société Nationale des Chemins de fer Français) operates most of France's rail network including the high-speed TGV trains. Trains between cities in France and other European countries are fast and frequent.

The TGV routes link the whole of France as well as Europe (direct lines to Brussels, Geneva and connections to London, Amsterdam, Cologne and Milan). The line from Paris follows the valley of the Rhone direct to Marseille then east along the coast through Nice and on into Italy.

The 250km high-speed TGV Méditerranée links Lille, in the north, to Marseille with stops at Valence, Avignon and Aix-en-Provence.

Driving to the PACA region

The region has an excellent road system. The A6 (Paris to Lyon) and A7, also known as the "Autoroute du Soleil" (Lyon to Marseille) motorways takes you south through France. The A8 motorway, "La Provençale", crosses the region from the west (Aix-en-Provence) to the east (Nice and into Italy).

The 'A' roads (Autoroutes) are mainly toll (peage) roads. Petrol/gas stations are approximately every 40kms with stop areas (Aires) every 10-15kms. The aires usually have excellent facilities many with picnic and childrens' play areas. The 'N' roads (routes Nationales) is the trunk road network.

Motorail

French Motorail, operated by Rail Europe, offers an attractive option of taking your car from Calais to the South of France. They have a choice of 2 or 4 berth sleeper compartments and 4 or 6 berth couchettes.
